|Description:||Assists in examination and treatment of patients under direction of Physician by performing the following duties. Depending upon training, experience and supervision, administers injections, performs EKGs and laboratory tests (venipuncture) and applies bandages. |
|Duties:||ESSENTIAL DUTIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. |
Prepare patient for physician evaluation (e.g., room patient, take vitals, etc.). Interview patients, measures vital signs, such as pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height, and records information on patients' charts. Prepare treatment rooms for examination of patients. Assure prompt patient flow.
Assist physician with evaluation and treatment; dispense medications only under the supervision of the physician on duty (unit dose only: ASA, Tylenol, Benadryl, Compazine, etc.). Attend to wounds and injuries as directed by the physician, including application of dressing, splints and casts.
Conduct various procedures as indicated (e.g., exam components, audiometry, orthorator, pulmonary function, blood drawing, injections, drug screen procedures, and lab procedures such as strep, urinalysis and glucose). Perform venipuncture or skin puncture for the purposes of withdrawing blood upon specific authorization of a licensed physician. Administer medication by intradermal, subcutaneous or intramuscular injection only.
Maintaining, logging and reconciling all cultures and corresponding cultures and corresponding charts to be checked daily.
Coordinate the flow of patients in the examination and treatment areas to ensure efficient use of the facility and physician.
Restock lab area daily, including all drawers and treatment trays.
Maintain current CPR certifications.
Attend mandatory staff meetings.
Assist in receiving and discharging patients.
Maintain inventory of medications and medical supplies, and follow all procedures regarding outdated medications.
Train other designated employees to take vital signs and prepare patients for physician evaluation.
Answer phones, check messages and make call backs daily. Perform various clerical functions as assigned by the Office/Clinic Manager or Executive Director, including file charts, monitor and order supplies and assist receptionist as needed.
Sterilize (autoclave) and wrap instruments.
Perform general cleaning duties, including: clean and restock treatment rooms and restrooms; clean spills on floors; clean break area, continual cleaning of the general area, clean up after yourself, vacuum, straighten and tidy reception area frequently, and spot clean any surface in need of immediate cleaning, including the outside of the clinic.

AT LEAST 1 YEAR EXP IN SIMILAR SETTING. Must respond sympathetically and maturely to patient needs. Medical assistants wishing to perform technical supportive services must receive such training as is "necessary to assure the medical assistant's competence in performing that service at the appropriate standard of care." Must have received at least ten (10) additional hours of practical training in administering injections and performing tests, and/or in venipuncture and skin puncture for the purpose of withdrawing blood. Candidates must have satisfactorily performed at least ten each of intermuscular, subcutaneous and intradermal injections and ten skin tests, and/or at least ten venipuncture and ten skin punctures. (16 C.C.R. Section 1361.1(b)(c); Section 1366.1.) Must be neat and professional in appearance. Detail oriented and well organized. Computer literate (i.e., be familiar with a PC and basic software, such as Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Word, etc.) One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bilingual may be required at certain locations or during certain shifts. Must be able to work under pressure and in stressful situations and must be able to work quickly when business conditions warrant.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS.
Must have MA certificate or equivalent experience. Must meet all legal requirements, including minimum age of 18 years.
